Volunteers work in partnership with staff to process materials, facilitate learning, and raise funds though processing book donations. Over 900 teens through adult volunteers provide over 45,000 hours annually to support Library activities and programs. Check out our one-time, short-term and weekly volunteer opportunities.
Your first step in becoming a volunteer with the Johnson County Library is to register in our volunteer database. You will then have access to register for volunteer opportunities.
Getting Started with Volunteering
- When you find an opportunity you are interested in on the Volunteer portal, sign up using the blue “Sign Up” button.
- If you are a new user, signing up for a volunteer position will prompt you to create a Samaritan volunteer profile. This account will be used to manage your registration and record service hours.
- Some volunteer opportunities will allow you to self-register for shifts. If the opportunity you selected does not have a date and time listed, it is an opportunity in which the Volunteer Coordinator will follow-up with you.
- If you don’t see a match for what you are interested in, select “Need More Information »” so our Volunteer Coordinator can follow up with you.
- Do you have flexibility to respond to last minute needs with the Library? If so, become a Swift Volunteer ». You will receive occasional emails from the Volunteer Coordinator regarding these opportunities. There is no obligation to participate.
Youth Volunteering
- We welcome and encourage youth volunteers 14 years and older for most volunteer positions.
- Summer teen volunteer opportunities are open to youth ages 13 years and older (as of June 1st). Opportunities are posted in late April. We occasionally have opportunities for younger participants. The position description will indicate the minimum volunteer age.
- Teen book reviewers will receive additional information by email within one week of registration.
Community Service Hours
- You may log into your volunteer profile » at any time to record service hours and/or print off verification of service hours. For virtual opportunities, please follow the requirements of individual volunteer positions to submit proof of service completed. Service hours are verified and approved weekly.
