Central Resource Library Building Upgrade

Earlier this year we presented initial design concepts of the proposed Central Resource Library’s building upgrade (CBU) to staff and the public through a series of meetings and online prompts. We received nearly 300 comments and suggestions – thank you!

We hope that the revised floorplan shows that we took many of your design suggestions to heart. A few of the big ones are:

  • We’re adding more public study/conference rooms!
  • Adding more natural light to the relocated and expanded Kids area!
  • Adding a drive-thru for holds pick-up and returns!

Comments received that you’ll see in the  refreshed design (highlighted in yellow on the floorplan):

  • Kids space:
    • The Kids space will be relocated and expanded
    • More windows and window seats will be added to the Kids section
    • We are increasing physical distance between early literacy area and Kids computers
    • Adding a dedicated storytime room that will also be open to patrons when not used for programming
  • Teens
    • We are keeping the Teen and public PC spaces where they are – they’re working well in the current locations, and may see furniture improvements
    • Adding enclosed spaces near Teens for quiet/loud – we’re adding two adjacent study rooms – the adjacent study rooms will also have connections for hooking up media to screens
    • The teen section will still be close to the Kids section for families with multiple ages
  • Public PCs
    • We are keeping the Teen and public PC spaces where they are – they’re working well in the current locations, and may see furniture improvements
    • The number of Public PC stations is based on need and we don’t anticipate that number changing by much. PC area will keep some dual monitor stations
    • The configuration of PC station desks will stay about the same – same amount of workspace
  • Drive-Thru
    • This feature will be added to the existing staff space on the east side of the building, near the existing book drop. The returns slot will also be reworked so that it is easier to access
  • General
    • Keep or increase the number of study and meeting rooms – done! This project will add five public rooms
    • No public space will be lost to staff-only uses - the ratio of public to staff space will be about the same as today
    • Efficiency improvements and refreshed finishes in staff spaces - benefits the entire system
    • Improved dock area adds to efficiency in materials handling – which benefits all patrons throughout the entire system
    • Improved area of refuge for weather emergencies
    • Exterior building and monument signage will be improved

We also heard many comments regarding furnishings – we haven’t forgotten or overlooked those, we’re just not quite there yet. Furnishings will be discussed during a later phase of design.
