“There is nothing wrong with being a monster.”

The Salt Grows Heavy follows a silent mermaid, abused and tired of captivity, who leaves her castle to wander the dying the world. Her daughters, thousands of horrible teeth-filled creatures roam what’s left of the world. The mermaid finds companionship in an androgenous plague doctor, who’s spend their life being pulled apart and pieced back together. What kind of chaos will the two get into together?

I liked this book, even if it was weird. Now I’m typically all for weird, but this was just a bit much for even me at points. The heavily described body horror kind of weirded me out, but some aspects of the story were very interesting. There was a smaller poem/short story written by the author which inspired the novel, and it is found at the very end of the book, almost as a prequal. I enjoyed that part, as well as the ending of the book itself. Weird, but good with a four out of five stars.
