Awesomeness for your inner-geek

  • Bring Your Own Fandom

a pair of glasses with the titles of popular fandoms written in the lenses

Do you geek out about Sherlock, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Homestuck or anything else? We want to celebrate your fandoms! Starting this week we are kicking off a series of exciting fandom related activities.

Throughout the month of July the Shawnee Library will build your fandom world, and they need your help. Every week we will work on building another world: Doctor Who, Supernatural, Harry Potter, Marvel and Lord of the Rings. Don't miss out on putting the Tardis in Diagon Alley!

Saturday, July 12 at noon, take a little of your fandom home as we make plushies at the Antioch Library. We will have felt, thread, stuffing and patterns to make characters and accessories from your favorite series. Show us your sewing skillz!

Are you the chosen team? Show us what you've got in our Ultimate Quizbowl for fandoms at the Central Resource Library on Thursday, July 17 at 5 p.m. Find up to 4 other friends to be on your team, and register for the game of a lifetime!

More Diversity in YA Literature

Video
Blue Valley Library YAAC talks with publishers and authors about diversity in YA literature.

Teens at our Blue Valley Library participate in a program called Teens Top Ten. Publishers send the library advance copies of books not yet available for purchase, in return for these amazing sneak peaks, our teens return reviews to the publishers and are able to nominate the titles for an award. Several months ago the reviewers at the Blue Valley Library looked at the latest books they had received and asked...where are all the diverse books?

Blue lives in a family of psychics, but the only power she has is amplifying the abilities of others. On All Hallow's Eve, she visits the Corpse Road with her aunt. There, her aunt sees the ghosts of everyone in Henrietta who will die in the next year. For the first time, Blue is able to see a ghost. It's a boy about her age. When she asks his name, he says, "Gansy, that's all there is." Her aunt tells her the only way she would be able to see the ghost is if he is her true love, or if she killed him. Possibly both.
