In the introduction to The Art of the Sonnet, Stephen Burt says “Sonnets [in the 1800’s] became an appropriate choice when a poet required a fixed form, for any subject, fast.” If you’ve read a sonnet, but have not yet tried your hand, you may be wondering how a sonnet can be written quickly regardless of the subject. And who wants to adhere to an ancient rhyme scheme anyway?
