“Image is the primary engine of most fiction. James Joyce, a frustrated singer, felt that music was what drove his stories and novels. Another writer might just as persuasively place voice as the hook to hang a story on. But we live in a visual age, and fiction, by necessity, has to compete with film and television, to say nothing of television advertising (some of the most pervasive narrative there is) for the attention of writers and readers.
