Saturday Starter: Creative Writing Prompt for June 15
Our Creative Writing Group meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. We are working through the exercises in Brian Kiteley's The 3 A.M. Epiphany: Uncommon Writing Exercises That Transform Your Fiction. The assignment for June 15th is Individual – 158.
Describe intensely and minutely the experience of one individual in the midst of a team sport. Don’t describe the other events on the field—the other players, the plays, the strategies. Simply present this one person’s graceful or graceless behavior as if isolated from all that’s going on around her. Show us the intensity of the experience, the single-mindedness of this athlete. 800 words
In sports films sometimes the director shuts off the sound effects—you hear some other set of sounds, like a babbling brook, or no sound at all. Do something like this. This is an exercise about process. Focus on the minute problems of the moment—the way tennis shoes skid across the asphalt because it’s 108 degrees and the soles are melting a tiny bit. Don’t be afraid of simple lists of detail. This exercise is a good excuse to practice slowing time down. But the main point here is to understand the consciousness of an athlete mid-stride.
Come with six copies of your completed assignment to share. We'll discuss and provide feedback. First time? Feel free to come and observe before jumping in.
