Legend by Marie Lu is a dystopian fiction novel about Day and June. The book swaps perspectives every chapter, giving a good comparison of what it looks like to live on opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum in this future dystopian society. Day is a world-renowned criminal operating in the Republic, while June is the younger sister of a esteemed officer of the Republic. Soon, Day learns that his family has the plague, by the mark on their door. As far as they know he’s died, he’s been on the run for years.

The United States gets replaced by the Republic of Gilead and the reproduction rates are super low. To combat this Handmaids are assigned to bear the children of elite couples. The story follows a handmaid assigned the name Offred. Her rights are heavily restricted and stripped of her old life. As the story goes on we meet the handmaids that are a part of a group to try and escape. Although escaping isn’t that easy in Gilead. There are guards and strict rules and punishments and it is too risky to be so reckless.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a futuristic dystopian novel. The World State is inhabited by genetically modified humans and runs on an intelligence-based social hierarchy. Bernard Marx doesn’t fit in with the rest of the World State’s population, so when he visits “the Savage Reservation” and sees the opportunity, he returns home with two imperfect individuals to gain attention. I felt sorry for Linda; there was no way she would have ever been accepted by the world in which she grew up.
