This film tells the intriguing story of African-American women’s social clubs in the Kansas City area during the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, focusing on the impact of these clubs in a time when segregation was the rule. These social clubs played an integral role in the life and well-being of Kansas City’s African-American community through their activities, volunteerism and social activism. Virginia Brackett, Professor Emeritus of English, retired in 2016 from Park University where she directed the Honors Academy and received varied teaching and service awards. She’s also a prolific writer and editor: She has published 14 books, including In the Company of Patriots, a nonfiction exploration of her relationship with her father, Captain Edmund C. Roberts, Jr., who was killed in Korea after serving in World War II.
