Jane Smiley, author of the Border War novel The All-true Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton visits the Library on April 10, 2012 to close out the Legacies of the Civil War series.

Lidie follows a young woman and her abolitionist husband in their journey toward Lawrence, Kansas in the 1850s. When tragedy strikes, Lidie throws herself into the mania of the Border War by seeking revenge.

Smiley explores the complex moral issues of the time, paying acute attention to inbred attitudes on both sides of the slavery question.

We recently spoke to Smiley via Skype and she shared some observations about Bleeding Kansas and the process of writing fiction in a historical setting.
