Sept. 1-Oct. 31, 2011

Get ready to BlitzRead! The adult reading program is part of the Legacies of the Civil War project and will run Sept. 1-Oct. 31. It encourages adults to read and explore parts of the Library’s collection of materials that they may not have discovered. Read any book you choose! Or, if you prefer, select materials related to the 150th anniversary of Kansas statehood and the beginning of the Civil War.

Participating is simple:

  • Starting Sept. 1, read or listen to any book.
  • Submit your entry online or on a BlitzRead! Bookmark entry form at any Johnson County Library location for a chance to win a prize. [Entry Form]
  • Repeat steps one and two! Read or listen to as many titles as you’d like to increase your chances of winning!

Prizes:
Prizes will be drawn from all entries received by Monday, Oct. 31, 2011.

  • 13 prizes of $25 gift cards
  • One grand prize winner will receive a $100 Gift Card!

The program will kick-off at the Central Resource Library on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011. More information can be found on our calendar of events.

Schedule of Events:

1:30 – 2:30 p.m. – Kansas and the Civil War in American History and Memory
As we celebrate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, most Americans do not think of the events in Kansas…unless, of course, you’re IN Kansas. Yet Kansas’ birthday coincides with the Civil War. Join us for a critical re-examination on how the Civil War affected the state of Kansas and why the Kansas struggles have been largely ignored in American history. Presented by Dr. Brian Craig Miller, a professor of history at Emporia State University.

2:45 – 3:45 p.m. – Kansas Women in the Civil War
The role of women in the Civil War has often been overlooked, but Kansas women served as nurses, cooks, clerks, and factory workers, while others were even soldiers and spies. Women’s work on the home front also played an important role. As writers, some raised support for the Union, while others championed the Republican Party; and most hoped women’s suffrage would be addressed at the war’s end. Using historical photographs and editorial cartoons, this presentation challenges the stereotypical idea of women’s roles in the war popularized by books such as Gone with the Wind. Presented by Diane Eickhoff, an independent historian.

Both programs are made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council and the Johnson County Library Foundation.

1 - 4 p.m. -- Traveling Book Store Used Book Sale
Friends of the Johnson County Library will host a Travelling Book Store Used Book Sale featuring a selection of gently used books from the used book stores available for purchase at bargain prices. Some related civil war titles will be available.
