Poem-a-Day

Peace Offering

Don’t walk away from me,
my Cherokee sister.
I am the white woman’s child,
with a soul of every woman.

Look into my eyes
and find the same sadness as yours.
Watch me walk our Ozark land
with joy for the dew-tipped meadow.

Do not count my ancestors against me.
In the time of the Strawberry Moon
let the dogwood blossoms delight us,
let them adorn our daughters’ hair.

After the clouds are empty,
let us pick up the rainbow -
you from the west and I from the east -
and carry it to the Mountains.

We will lay the offering down,
a new ritual to honor the women
who danced, grieved,
and lived bravely there before.
